DeKalb County Central United School District earns ENERGY STAR 50% Leader recognition, commendation letter from U. S. Senator Richard G. Lugar.

ENERGY EDUCATION RECEIVES HIGHEST U.S. EPA HONOR: 2012 ENERGY STAR® SUSTAINED EXCELLENCE AWARD

School Districts, Other Clients Reduce Carbon Footprint, Exceed $2.8 Billion in Energy Savings

DALLAS — For the second year in a row, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United States Department of Energy (DOE) have awarded their highest honor, the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award to Energy Education, Inc. in recognition of the company’s continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy conservation. Energy Education’s accomplishments were recognized during an awards ceremony in Washington D.C. on March 15. The ceremony also makred the 20th anniversary of ENERGY STAR.

In 26 years, Energy Education has worked with more than 1,200 educational, large church and health organizations nationwide in saving more than $2.8 billion in utility costs. An ENERGY STAR partner since 2005, Energy Education received the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award in 2009 and 2010 and the Sustained Excellence Award in 2011.

“For more than a quarter of a century it has been Energy Education’s mission to help clients reach the highest level of energy efficiency,” said Energy Education Chairman and Founder, 
Dr. William S. Spears. “Receiving the highest level of recognition from the United States Environmental Protection Agency is a validation of the efforts not only of every Energy Education team member, but that of hundreds of thousands of our client staff members who have done their part to save precious financial and environmental resources through behavioral energy conservation.”

Energy Education clients are some of the most energy efficient entities in the nation. Throughout 2011, numerous Energy Education clients received significant ENERGY STAR recognition:

  • Indiana school district Decatur County Community Schools became the nation’s first and only ENERGY STAR 60 Percent Leader in recognition of the district’s extraordinary achievement of reducing energy consumption district-wide by more than 60 percent.
  • Loudoun County Public Schools, Ashburn, Virginia, received the 2012 Sustained Excellence Award as well as 2010 & 2011 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards.
  • Oklahoma State University earned 11 ENERGY STAR Certifications in the Residence Hall/Dormitory category.
  • More than 840 Energy Education client buildings in the United States received the ENERGY STAR in 2011.
  • 61% of the total K-12 ENERGY STAR Top Performers are Energy Education clients.
  • As of January 2012, 843 of the 1,605 K-12 school district ENERGY STAR Leader recognitions for 2011 were for Energy Education clients.

“As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ENERGY STAR program, EPA is proud to recognize Energy Education with the 2012 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. ENERGY STAR Award Winners: Energy Education Clients

A number of organizations implementing Energy Education’s program are already involved with ENERGY STAR as Partners or Leaders, or have earned the ENERGY STAR Label for one or more of their facilities. 

ENERGY STAR Certification: As of January 11, 2012, of 7,388 ENERGY STAR K-12  certifications earned, 3,728 — a full 50% — are in school districts that implemented our Energy Education program before the building earned the ENERGY STAR . Of the 1,605 earning the Label in 2011 alone, 843 — or 52% — are in school districts that implemented our program before earning the Label. In 2010, of the 2,214 schools earning the Label, 1,116 — or 50% — are in school districts that implemented our program before earning the Label. Energy Education actively encourages its clients to participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

To earn an ENERGY STAR recognition, the facility must be certified by a licensed engineer as being among the lowest 25 percent of buildings nationwide in energy use per square foot, and must maintain the highest standards for the quality of its internal environment.

ENERGY STAR LEADER: Of 356 ENERGY STAR Leader awards in the K-12 sector, 118 of them — or 53% — are in school districts that had our Energy Education program before the organization earned ENERGY STAR Leader status. There are only thirty-one 30-, 40-, 50- or 60-percent Leader school districts in the nation. Twenty-two are Energy Education clients. The only three 50-percent and the only 60-percent Leaders in the nation are Energy Education clients.

To qualify as an ENERGY STAR Leader, the organization must have two or more buildings eligible to receive an ENERGY STAR rating, which must comprise at least 50% of the owned floor area, and achieve a portfolio-wide average reduction in normalized source energy use of 10% or more. Leader Top Performers have a portfolio-wide efficiency in the top 25% of the nation’s K-12 buildings. One hundred of the 163 — or 61% — Top Performer school districts nationwide are Energy Education Inc. clients.
