USD 470 joins list of Energy Star leaders

Special to the Traveler

USD 470 has joined EPA's list of ENERGY STAR Leaders, an elite group of organizations that have improved energy efficiency across all of the buildings in a portfolio.

To date, ENERGY STAR Leaders include organizations such as schools, hospitals, supermarkets, commercial real-estate businesses and hospitality companies.

"USD 470 is pleased to be named an EPA ENERGY STAR Leader. Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs" said Superintedent Ron Ballard.

"Through our partnership with Energy Education, Inc., we have saved more than $530,000 on our utility costs since fall of 2005. The ENERGY STAR is a further validation of the great job everyone in the school district is doing to save energy and money," said Energy Manager Paula Nelson.

The ENERGY STAR program was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.

Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products, new homes, and commercial and industrial buildings.

Products and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR designation prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy efficiency specifications set by the government.

Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved about $19 billion on their energy bills, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles.
