Grand Rapics Community College Today March 4, 2010 GRCC Energy Conservation Program Saves College $1 Million Nineteen months into the energy conservation program and partnership with Energy Education Inc., the college has saved approximately $1 million in energy costs. The savings have resulted in an environmental impact equivalent to 1,464 cars being removed from the road; 150,005 tree seedlings grown for 10 years; or a reduction in 5,865 tons of carbon dioxide emitted. Energy Manager Dorothy Burns notes that this data is compiled using database called EnergyCAP which she uses to monitor the college’s savings using monthly utility bills, daily temperature data and other building information. The program uses the 2007 baseline to calculate the college’s savings. We are making changes in our behavior and operation of our building systems that will be sustainable for decades, begun by a proven implementation process that turns energy-saving strategies into reality throughout our campus community. In September of 2009 Energy Education Inc. awarded the college the Good Stewardship Award because of the programs positive impact on the environment, including decreased carbon emissions and the conservation of natural resources.
