Our clients’ success

Nearly every day, a newspaper somewhere in the country is carrying a story about the success of our clients’ energy conservation programs. Below are just a few examples of the great work they are doing, and the privilege it is to serve them in such tangible, noteworthy ways.

Terrell ISD is saving hundreds of thousands of dollars with its energy management program, energy manager Stan Heisel told school board members at their March meeting.

Heisel reported more than $570,000 in energy cost savings over the last 24 months as compared to other years, without taking into account factors such as rate increases for electricity and natural gas and power use increases such as added air conditioners.

About three years ago, Terrell ISD contracted with Energy Education Inc., a national company which claims its energy conservation programs have saved more than $1 billion for public schools, and implemented an energy saving program.

As part of the program, Heisel conducts energy audits to ensure teachers and students are comfortable during class time and scheduled activities and energy is used only as needed.

“Part of my job is to help motivate everyone in the district to use energy wisely while keeping classrooms comfortable,” Heisel said. “I also walk around campuses and leave a gentle reminder when I see something left on and I observe when unoccupied areas are being cooled or heated.”

The program is based on common sense approaches such as taking advantage of day-lighting, while actively tracking and managing energy use, Heisel said.

“I was honestly a little skeptical about the program,” Heisel said. “One of my concerns was that they are trying to sell their product, but the estimates on our savings are actually very conservative. The program takes into account all the various variables such as the weather and the cost of energy. I think it gives us a true picture of what our savings actually are.”

Heisel credits the district's lead electrician and chief heating and air conditioning engineer Dave Suddith for much of the district's savings.

“He uses energy managing software to make sure we are only using air conditioners in areas where they are needed, when they are needed and he know's how to take care of our HVAC units so they work at maximum efficiency,” Heisel said.

According to Heisel, the goals of the program are to maintain comfort in occupied areas, minimize energy waste and to save money.

So far, the program has been excellent for accomplishing all three goals, Heisel said.

“The success of this program is due to the faculty, staff and administration showing their support,” Heisel said.
