Ogden schools going green, saving money

OGDEN -- An energy management agency hired by the Ogden City School District has faculty and staff thinking green.

In a report presented before the school board Wednesday, district energy manager Darwin Smith announced $270,408 in energy savings over the last six months. The savings are primarily the result of monitoring natural gas and electricity use, Smith said.

"We have experienced significant savings, and we expected to," said Superintendent Noel Zabriskie, in a media release.

In June of last year, the district signed a four year contract with the consulting firm Energy Education, after watching the company's program work successfully in the Weber School District over the last four years.

"Our primary objective is that our schools are comfortable and great teaching environments," Zabriskie said. "Elimination of energy waste and saving dollars are great added benefits of the program."
